Starling
Had quite a surprise at the pool yesterday when about 40 starlings suddenly descended. The pool  is not big enough for that many !
Most were young  and its always  hard to separate omne out to photograph so I did both. One adult had superb colours on the neck which I,ve not seen so intense before.

John, the lighting and colors are incredible. The starlings always look very purple here. Might be a different species. It looks great on your side of the water. We have a real problem with large flocks of starlings in California, especially at dairies and other grain storage areas. They are non-natives, and as seems to be the case for so many, have made themselves quite at home and quite the nuisances here.

First of all I'm really surprised to see the green luminescence of this Starling.  As Ed Williams stated, the starlings we have here are black and purple luminescent.  The juveniles are gray without any luminescence at all.  And as Ed stated, they are quite a nuisance species, introduced here many years ago.  They have been implicated in plane crashes.  They are the bullies around bird feeders.  They cause all kinds of problems for the agricultural community here in the US.  This year, we had about 60 to 80 juveniles in large flocks descend upon my neighborhood.  I have never seen so many.  But the rainy winter and the dry late spring here must have created the perfect storm for them to breed and multiply.  It has not been pretty.

Starlings certainly have an elegant pelt, and this one is no exception. Must have been golfers in a previous incarnation. They are even wearing gaiters! A despicable bird, nonetheless.cheeky

Thanks all.
I have to say most of ours are more purple- the adults anyway. It must have been either one individual or the  evening (6 o.clock) strong sun.. They came down again today at almost exactly the same time. Not been through them yet.
Cheers
