Mimic Meets Model

I had a very good day out shooting dragonflies with a long telephoto, extension tube, and teleconverter.  When I got back to the truck, I decided to switch to the 180 mm macro.  I saw a patch of bug fuzz protruding from beneath a curled grape leaf. A bumble bee mimic (Laphria species)  captured and was devouring a bumble bee before my eyes.  These robber flies are excellent mimics of bumble bees and will often  take bees as prey. I was able to carefully rotate the leaf and fired off about a dozen shots.  I used some fill flash (-1 ev) to lighten up the shadows (1/90 sec at f13, ISO 1250), slight crop for comp........................Jim

Jim, the details in the larger view are outstanding.  It's also neat how well the fly mimics the bee (Something that I'll have to watch for, thanks for the lesson.)  I assume that you describe your macro-tele rig as you used it (long lens, ET, TE, camera), but want to take this opportunity to make sure that others who may use such a rig for long stand-off macro work are aware that this is the order to use for maximum magnification.

Wow, Jim, I think I would have thought I had a good day out shooting to get this, so can't wait to see your dragonflies! What an excellent capture of nature.  I am learning so much on this site!  I didn't even realize that there were bee mimics!  Amazing!  Great shot, with so much detail.

Really hard to tell the difference here between the bee and the fly Jim. Amazing shot, nice work.

That's pretty cool, Jim.  Without your explanation I would have thought this was cannibalism - go figure enlightened
