Male Northern Harrier
by Dennis Plank
I happened to be on the back porch late yesterday afternoon with my camera beside me (a Bluebird had been taunting me earlier) when I heard the swallows start making "Raptor Approaching" noises. I popped out the door and this male Harrier that's been dropping by a few times a day this summer came through. We had a pretty stiff breeze and he was working upwind, so I had time for several shots before he got out of range. Only two of them actually were as sharp as I'd like and the other one doesn't have as good a look at the eye, though I may process it for other reasons.
With my abysmally poor aim, this guy was pretty close to the bottom of the frame, so I moved some sky from above him to below him.
7Dii, Sigma 150-600 C @ 600 mm, hand held, f/9, 1/1600, iso 640, aperture priority, pattern metering, +2/3 EV. Processed in LR & PS CC. Cropped to 7.8 MP in a 2x1 format before resizing. Taken at 5:04 pm yesterday.
