House Finch

A rather busy habitat shot, but I liked the pose and the seed in its mouth.

Canon 7d Mark II
Sigma 150-600 at 500 mm
1/400 at f6.3
ISO 640

Thanks for looking.  Comments and suggestions are appreciated.

Nice detail in the finch with a good pose, Allen.  The seed in the mouth is neat, especially since it's possible to tell which plant it came from.  The bg looks a bit noisy, so you might do something there.  Beautiful color.  By the way, I think you have a Purple Finch here.

Dennis,
Thanks for commenting.  In my original file, I had labeled this as a Purple Finch, but changed my mind.  In reading on this in my various books the features that suggested a House Finch were the curved bill, the brown cap surrounded by red, the lack of eyebrow, and deep red rump.  Perhaps others will weigh in.

Very nice clarity and colors in this capture, Allen. The composition is centered but that's about all you can do with a shot as close as this one.

Definitely a House Finch and not a Purple Finch.

I don't see why this should show so much noise at only ISO 640. I also feel the red is a bit too saturated.

I agree that this is a house finch.  House finches have differentiated belly feathers whereas the purple finch has undifferentiated belly feathers.  They are hard to distinguish the difference.  You got a nice pose in less-than-perfect lighting conditions.  Tremendous detail here.
