Canon 1DX, 500mm f4 x 1.4 TC, tripod
f5.6, 1/640, ISO2500

Payette Lake, Idaho, last weekend.

50% of full frame. Adjustments to Levels. Selective sharpening of the bird. I'd like to get more detail in the whites and blacks but it just didn't seem to be possible in the early evening light.

C & C, please. Thanks for looking.

You can tell by the blue overtones that it is late light which can be very difficult to shoot in.   Still a good shot that shows the bold yellow feathers quite nicely.  Good focus and detail also.

Hi Jim,

Large view is awesome.  If desired you could do an adjustment layer and reduce the cyan in the whites.  I like this one asd isdevil...................Jim

I like the pose and the overall composition with the clean background. You might consider cloning out the OOF branch in the LLC.  Excellent detail in the yellow and brown feathers. devil

Beautiful portrait of this grosbeak Jim. I can't ever seem to get close enough in an open setting to get anything close to this. The BG is choice, colors great, details great. If your personal standards allow it, there seems to be a tiny little extra dark spot (bug?) under the branch and the extra branch in the Lower left corner could be cloned out. It feels really picky to even point that out.

Looks very good to me Jim, plenty sharp and good detail except losing a bit in the blacks.  devil

I think you did really well on this evening grosbeak image considering your lighting conditions.  The yellows on the body and the black on the top of the head turned out quite well.  You got a nice head turn and really good detail with minimum noise considering iso 2500 and a 50% crop.  I had one male and two females visit for a few days but managed only to get a headshot of female.  These are really beautiful birds.

Very nice, especially given the low light conditions.

Excellent image of this beauty, Jim.  The colors show nicely in the soft light, with a natural softness of the gradient background.  I tend to agree that cloning the OOF branch would only improve what's already an excellent image.

Beautiful detail, Jim.  You might remove that oof bg branch from the lower left.

A beautiful bird, Jim, and I think under the lighting conditions you captured it well!

You did a nice job getting detail in this Grosbeak in such low light, Jim. I really like that pose. Maybe a bit of detail loss in the blacks, but an admirable job in this light.

Good detail, color, and pose.  As you mentioned, a little more detail in the blacks would be good, but quite nice as is.  Consider adding a catchlight to the eye?  This species nest at higher elevations near my home and are an uncommon feeder bird in winter.  Just not MY feeder.
