Greater Roadrunner (Geococcyx californianus)

Place: Phoenix, AZ
Date: May 16 2017, 8:17 am
Equipment: Nikon D7200, AF-S Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR @ 220mm, G1325, RRS BH-55
Exposure: ISO 800, Aperture priority matrix metered, 1/640th @ f/5.6
Raw, PS CC 2017 on Mac, cropped to 82% of full frame

A Greater Roadrunner will visit our back yard at random times, as this one did a few days ago. They are bold and fearless; all other species in the yard take note and stay clear.

Shot just off the patio and through the door glass. I had to back off from full zoom for this.

I find this to be an appealing road runner image.  I like how you have it framed with green on both sides, but yet enough other materials in the image to show it is in a dry climate.  Also, like that you have detail in the shadow areas, as well as good overall sharpness.  Thanks for sharing.

Excellent detail in the subdued light, Richard. The roadrunner gave you a nice regal pose. A very nice image!!!

I love this one - especially the biggie. The vegetation at the top frames things nicely and the dappled light is just spot on..
About the best RR pic I,ve seen.!

Hi Richard
Must be nice to have a Roadrunner in the back yard.  Nice shot, keep up the good work.

One of the many reasons I'll probably go back to the Southwest is that I've never managed a decent shot of one of these when I've encountered them.  This one is very nice.  Excellent feather detail and nice light on the head and breast.

This bird is amazing, and your picture is pretty good.
I wish I could see it someday...

Light, detail and colors in the larger image are wonderful.  I agree with John's comment about it being really nice to have the green but also the dry materials.  I don't think you could have gotten a better position or pose from the bird.

Impressive especially shot through the glass of your patio door.  Nice color and detail and I like the effect of the dappled light.
