Zion morning
by Kathy Barnhart
Zion was very crowded when we were there recently, at least in the valley. We camped on the east side and I got up early to photograph the beautiful lines and striations on the rocks nearby. I had it all to myself and it was magical. I hope this conveys some of that feeling!
I take my tripod sometimes but often take it and then don't use it. So this morning I didn't take it and had the ISO bumped up to 1000. I think my camera handled it pretty well. Canon 5dM3, ISO1000, 28 mm, f/16, 1/80.
Thanks in advance for any comments or critiques.

13 commentsNever got a chance to head to Zion on our Western trip. Nice comp and a good range of colors I guess the only improvement that could be made is to shoot this scene at a lower Iso. But you did darn well with the camera set at 1000. well done..................Jim
The light here is just beautiful; I just love it early in the day - or of course even better late in the day (for some reason I've always thought late, afternoon light was warmer...)
I really love the balance in your composition. Ironically, I just commented on Igor's "regal" tree image and I must say that this horizontal comp also has some bold, grand, and towering characteristics, yet is not a vertical format... ;-) However, I think the horizontal format here also has some gentleness to it; a grace, showing off the shapes, shadows and lines, as you described.
Processing is beautiful and I have no nits or suggestions. Fabulous landscape image.

This image perfectly sums up the experience as I remember it with a nice arrangement of elements, perfectly spaced. My only nit might be with the color/saturation of the sky. I might try a skosh more magenta as an experiment there... then again it could be just my monitor! (There's also a small dust bunny in the LRC of the sky.)
I love to walk around a place like this without my tripod and just do what I call "jazz" photography instead of being tethered to the limits of my equipment particularly the height of the tripod.
