One Tough Mom

On our trip to view Mt. Saint Helen's, heavy clouds, rain, and snow showers prevented us from getting ideal views.  Jenny came back down the trail that ran along Coldwater Lake with news of a Canada goose sitting on its tree-stump nest.  I walked carefully up the trail and there she was sitting on a fortress like nest on the top of a tree stump that arose from the lake.  She was covered with rain drops and sat perfectly still to avoid detection. The weather was brutally cold and wet.  Her wings were pressed up against the edges of the nest to shield here eggs from the icy rain and cold temps.  She never budged and I took a series of photos without disturbing her.  I cropped the image slightly and adjusted lights, darks, and midtones with luminosity masks.  I enhanced micro-contrast slightly with Topaz Detail to bring out the rain drops on the bird's back.  K5 IIs 300 mm f4 (1/2500 sec at f6.3, ISO 800)...............................Jim

Definitely not the best time of year for St Helens, Jim, and this has been a very, very wet spring (from what my wife kept telling me while I was basking in the Texas sun).  An interesting and well composed image, though I find the head turn a little odd.  I really like the wing spread that goes with your narrative.

Yes the Canada goose mother doing a Canada goose mother thing in protecting its eggs.  Those eggs are now hatched most likely and the whole family has become an efficient poop machine.  Nice point of view.  In my area, Canada geese are a federally protected nuisance.  My next-door neighbor will typically have 50 grass feeding geese on a daily basis on their yard between May and July.  It's not a pretty sight.

Quite often around here, Poppa Goose can get aggressively protective of Mom on her nest. One can get a real headache from a close flyby! I like this image, not just for its quality, but also for the narrative. Good post!cool
