Wilson’s Warbler (Cardellina pusilla)

Place: Phoenix, AZ
Date: April 14, 2017, 8:17 am
Equipment: Nikon D7200, AF-S Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR @ 480mm, G1325, RRS BH-55
Exposure: Auto ISO 800, Aperture priority matrix metered, 1/80th @ f/5.6
Raw, PS CC 2017 on Mac, cropped to 44% of full frame

Apparently, it is time for a bit of gratuitous color in order to get some comments, enlightened  so here’s another migrant passing through our yard this month. The warblers often are attracted to the sound of the running water and drop down for a drink or a bath.

Honest critiques requested; all comments appreciated. If possible please view the large version before commenting.

Well posed and sharp. A well composed rendition. One of the things that convinced me of the value of the 200-500 is it's ability to hold up under a fairly large crop.

My one nit is minor, and I can understand the reluctance to crop further; that is, the amount of space given to the foreground slightly OOF rock. But the photo is well balanced as is, so I understand the decision.

A nice capture of this little bird. He must of stood pretty still for you because it's quite sharp for 1/80 second. The OOF rock in the FG is slightly distracting to my eye, not much you could have done though. Smaller aperture would have certainly helped but you were already between a rock and a hard place (haha pun intended) with the slow shutter speed. Still a very appealing image, thanks for posting it.

This bird in this setting is really nice!  Wonderful details, and I like the yellows....I have trouble with them sometimes.  Sharon

The larger image is definitely a treat to see! His bright colours really help him stand out. Love your composition! Kinda cool having that yellow feather beside him too. No nits from me!

Not sure I have ever seen a Warbler image on rocks before Richard and I really dig it. Nice techs (as usual) and I see it is already a 44% crop. I don't like to take it much further than that either, so the decision on how you composed this works well even with the OOF FG. It frames the bird nicely and drives your eye to the subject immediately.

Very nice Richard. Great colors and rocky habitat. The bird really pops!

The larger version is gorgeous and even seems to greatly lessen the effect of the OOF rocks.  It seems very intimate, like when you click on it all of a sudden you're right there with the bird.  The colors and detail of the bird are exquisite.

Sharp and well composed.  The OOF rocks are not an issue for me and I have no issue with the bird being relatively small in the frame.  Thanks for posting

Sorry it's taken me so long to get to this one, Richard.  When I look at the image as a whole, I like the oof foreground rocks.  It almost looks like the warbler is on a stage.  Nice work.
