MOM?

I took this photo in a snowstorm in Gennessee, Colorado on May 1 of last year.  The Denver Bison herd lives on a preserve and was started in 1914 when Denver acquired the bison from the herd in Yellowstone.  The herd roams 743 acres of the over 2000 acre Gennesee Park.  Through the combination of timing, where the herd was located, and the snowstorm, I was able to witness several births.  This calf was less than a day old and was wandering around looking for his mom for quite a while.  He kept trying to nurse and was rejected.  This is the moment when he approached the right mother.  Some unseen signal passed between them, as very shortly after this moment he began nursing.

Nikon D800, 300 mm , f8, 1/1000 of a second, handheld with the front of the telephoto pushed through the delightfully wide openings in the chain fence, camera covered with a clear plastic hoody.

Comments always appreciated.

ps. If this is in the wrong forum I apologize.  I did not know if it belonged here or in Wildlife.  These animals are on a large preserve.

This is a great image, especially with the accompanying story. I think you can make out the umbilical cord hanging down from the calf's belly.  It might make a good sequence to have a photo of the calf nursing once the good connection was made! Nice work.

Hi Kathy

Thank you for the comment and that is the umbilical cord!

Awe. Wonderful image and wonderful story. I like that you included the whole calf and just the head, neck and a part of the shoulder of the mother.

Major cute points.  I like the interaction.  Colors and textures are really well done.
