Canyon Daybreak

I'm sure this tree has been photographed before, as it can be difficult to find original FG on the edge of the Grand Canyon's South Rim. I've looked around online and haven't found a similar comp yet, so maybe not. I thought this pinion pine (I think) provided a nice balance and depth to the canyon below.  I bracketed exposures due to the dynamic range, but amazingly I was able to use a single exposure for this one. This was taken this past fall.

Some fine muted colors and tones. Enjoy all your work,Harry. Good balance on the tree; but it is in the way of the main subject.  The cliff on the right would be enough foreground for me.

I was just about to comment, harry, before reading your posting comment, that what I like about this image is the original take on this location. I can't recall ever seeing this tree in an image, or any GC image quite like this. The comp is a bit unconventional with the tree nearly centered rather than being used as a framing element, but I like the placement. The light is terrific and the sunstar adds a lot to the image. Fine image.

Thanks guys for your comments.  Yes, the tree takes up a god portion of the image but the haze in the canyon itself made it less interesting for me.  The semi silhouetted rock ridges and distant formations give a hint to what was out there.  Had there ben more interest in the canyon, I probably would have looked for a different comp., and maybe looked like more of the images from around this outlook.  As I took the image, I was reminded of Chinese landscape paintings that were more abstract.  I probably could have processed this in a more silhouetted fashion for that effect, I guess.

Really nice sunrise image of Grand Canyon, Harry.  The placement of the tree definitely works for your composition, providing the perfect balancing element to your composition, holding the eye and getting one to explore the left hand side of the image, rather than being held by the brightness of the sun.  Excellent work.

I like this but it I would also like to see a comp shifted to the right.
The tree on the far left side and the sunrise more the focus.

I have been to this one a few times and have pondered it. To my eye, the tree dominates the whole scene, but is not what my eye most wants to see (which is the beautifully lit canyon). I still like the image, but could see using a different composition (such as in your B&W later in the day).

This is excellent Harry.  I think you've done beautifully for this location and chosen elements.  The tree is not centered and a good portion leans left which I think makes the overall balance of this landscape just about right.  The sunstar is a great addition as has been mentioned, although I'm kinda wishing there was just a tad more space to the right, but that's minor.

Well seen and captured. Oh yeah, and the sky, clouds, sunset light and colors aren't too shabby either.

Very nice soft mood here, Harry.  I remember mornings like this on the Colorado Plateau . . . and miss them.

Excellent. Nice job with the dynamics from a single! The image opens nicely from bottom to top, and the sun rays add a great touch.

Beautiful, and inspirational Harry.  I love the gentle, yet bold color ( I know, makes no sense, but that's the way it comes across).
