Scissortailed Flycatcher
by Dennis Plank
I went up to Refugio (somehow pronounced "refurrio") this past Thursday and noticed a lot of these along the side road from Highway 35 to there (Texas 774). Traffic on that road is very, very light, so you can actually just stop and take pictures if you're careful and put your blinkers on. I've spent three early mornings now trying to get some decent images and I think I finally managed something today. There were two of them (a pair, I believe) perched on the wire together and the female flew toward the male who then flew up and just a few feet down the wire, giving me an opportunity for the take-off preparation and a few flight shots. Unfortunately it turned it's head in flight, so only one of those frames showed a catch light. Here's the take-off prep.
7D2, Sigma 150-600 C @ 600 mm, hand held, f/8, 1/2000, iso 640, manual exposure. Processed in LR & PS CC. Cropped to a 7.7 MP 9x16 format. I removed some "horse fencing" from the bottom of the frame and just left the barbed wire. Taken this morning at 9:02 AM. A little bit of haze kept the light from getting too harsh.
