Hungry Packer

by Rudy Ruberti

This is from a backpacking trip I took last summer with my daughter in the Eastern Sierra, taken about 50 yards from our camp near Hungry Packer Lake.  I used a polarizer for the foreground, but removed it for the sky and blended the two images in PS.
Thanks,

As a true to life image using the polarizers to nice effect, a very pleasing image.
Wish I was there, my best compliment.

A wonderful Sierra Club Calendar type of image. That's beautiful country and you captured it well. They say there's good trout fishing in this lake. The small trout rises in the creek confirms that they're in there. Perhaps there was an evening hatch.

I am usually not much for blue sky, but this is a super alpine image, Rudy.  Very well done.

Rudy,

I'm with Igor all the way - this had Sierra Club written all over it (even before any comments.)  Truly a magnificent Sierra alpine landscape.  EXCELLENT choice and strategy with the two exposures (PL and non PL) - great idea and even a more fantastic execution.

Only a couple minor nits that can be addressed.  I so see quite a bit of cyan amongst the granite throughout; the rock in the water, up the left side, further midground and even what looks like an old weathered juniper far right.  There's just a few targeted spots that the blue/cyan could be pulled back on.  The only other suggestion would be to try and address the hot area in the hottest  part of the mountain peak; it's a gorgeous peak, but a little hot just down from the top.

You've got a Galen Rowell masterpiece working here.  Great work!

Well crafted shot Rudy.  Nice placement of the peak to avoid cutting off the reflection.  Since a relatively busy scene as the Sierra can be with the trees and bushes, the simple blue sky works well and allows the nice light on the peak.  Might consider darkening the peak a little, looks slightly washed out.  Good move with the polarizer, might have created a dark banding problem in the sky.

Really beautiful, Rudy. Very pristine. Well composed, taken, and processed. Good suggestions from Lon and Harry. A very rewarding image from your backpacking trip and hauling your camera equipment up there. devil

Rudi, the Sabrina Basin with its lakes and mountains is one of my favorite places in the Sierra. I have wandered all over the area on many different occasions, and Hungry Packer Lake and Picture Peak are among my favorites.

I think you did a fine job on this, but agree about working the cyan and the hot spot on Picture Peak. The light is gorgeous, and you handled it very well.

Gorgeous Sierra backcountry capture, Rudy. Makes me long for the summer that I can get back up there, although this year it may be late July...

Really nice job maintaining details in the shadows. I think the light on the peak looks a little hot and I might burn that down a bit but other than that this is a beauty.

This is a fine landscape, Rudy.  Good idea blending the non-polarized sky with the rest.  I'll have to give this a try.

The balance of polarized foreground, unpolarized sky looks very good here, Rudy.  The combination of blues and green in the foreground are wonderfully inviting.  I too could see just a touch of burning on the brightest part of the peak and it's reflection, a minor nit on a spectacular image.

Nice high country scene. Very inviting. I have looked down on Hungry Packer from the ridge up to the left, but never been to the lake. Great area and fine image from there.

The composition works well with the reflection placed as you did, and the water leads nicely to the peak in the distance. The little touches of yellow are nice too.
