Green-winged Teal (Anas crecca)

Place: Gilbert Water Ranch, AZ
Date: March 3, 2017, 1:54 pm
Equipment: Nikon D7200, AF-S Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR @ 500mm, G1325, RRS BH-55
Exposure: ISO 800, Aperture priority spot metered, 1/2000th @ f/8
Raw, PS CC 2017 on Mac, 53% of frame

The light was less than ideal when I finally made it to the Water Ranch, and I was the only photographer at this pond. My reward was this teal that came out of the vegetation and sat in plain view for me.

As always: honest critiques requested; all comments appreciated. Larger image provided as always.

Nice species, and not easy to frame, in my experience. Love the overall setting, the natural habitat you included in the image. The mute light may have well been beneficial for the image. Well done ! Cheers, Hans

Nice composition with a good look back pose.   You've included just enough of the little grasses to give us an idea of the vegetation he was in.   This species is always a bit on the shy side here, so congrats!

Nice work especially with what light you had Richard. If mine, I might be tempted to tone down the highlights just a tad on the BG, but still a very nice image.

Very nice pose on this beautiful Green Winged Teal.  I really like the simplicity of the setting.  I'm not too bothered by the brightness of the background.  I just calibrated my monitor and it seems fine.  If I were going to make any improvement on this image I would say a fill flash could have brightened up the face a little bit.   Really nice work though.

You got great details here Richard for the light conditions. I like the clean and simple look of this. Nice balance in the frame. You've already pointed out the only issue I can see here, the lighting.

The only suggestion I have would be to dodge the face a bit and see if it helps to lighten it up Richard. Great comp and the included habitat makes this an interesting image imo. Love the seamless background too.

In fact, it looks as if you could have actually placed the teal there for this image.  The composition of this is beautiful, the foreground and the clear water in the background.  I've never seen a Green-winged Teal, although there are supposed to be some here in the winter.  The teal is beautifully sharp and detailed.
