Another Lonesome Oak

Thank you for your comments on my other Lonesome Oak image! This oak is near Columbia, in one my secret spots that is no longer a secret, since I showed it to Lon. enlightened

Nikon D-7100
Nikkor 18-140mm @ 42mm
ISO 100, 1/50 @ f-16
TK's v4 actions.
Clone a sign nailed to the tree.
Full Frame

Hindsight being 20/20, I could have used a 2-stop ND Grad to reduce the sky exposure and open the foreground. As it was I used TK's masks to darken the sky, and also to work the brightness and contrast in the foreground.

Please see tha large version. Thanks!

Your thoughts are always appreciated. cool

I like the image. Nice color and texture in the foreground and the rocks form a leading line that leads the eye to the tree which makes a nice anchor for the image. There are just enough clouds in the sky to make it interesting. Living on the prairie I am partial to a single tree as a subject or focal point of an image.

Another real nice oak image. No suggestions from me. The processing looks good.

Rather than use a ND grad, bracket and blend? You know how to do it. :)

Fantastic foreground in this one and I really like the centered comp. Maybe suggest cropping just a bit off the top. Processing looks good to me.

Preston,

This came out beautifully! To be honest, much better than when you pointed out the scene while we both stood there.  I was looking more at the tree and not paying attention to the lead in with the rock, greens, lichen, etc.  This pops very nicely.

My thought would be to have not so much sky up top, but then the nice clouds are such that I wouldn't want to crop in to them.  Great job with this one!

Not just with this image, or with just two of here, but it's amazing how when more than one of us are at a particular location how we all see things so differently, even though you're both standing right there....

The foreground with it's rocks and great mix of grasses and moss/lichen makes a wonderful lead up to the fine shape of that tree., Preston.  Your efforts at handling the dynamic range look good.  Centering the tree gives it a lot of weight in this view, but also has me wondering about a shot from a few steps left with the tree off center.

Love the textured and verdant foreground to set up this gnarly oak.  I think I would visit this tree often when stormy skies are in the area.  I'd love to see this with a crazy sky.  Real nice as is, Preston.

Nice mix of textures here, I especially like those boulders. The filter might have may the tree overly dark, while it could have been opened up in post but maybe more difficult.  Comp and colors well balanced, and even a sprinkle of clouds. Looks good as is for me, looks like a resilient tree.

I too find the foreground that Lon points out to be fascinating. I think it adds a lot! Great way to build a beautiful scene around a beautiful tree.
