Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura)

Place: Gilbert Water Ranch, AZ
Date: February 24, 2017 10:22 am
Equipment: Nikon D7200, AF-S Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR @ 410mm, G1325, RRS BH-55
Exposure: ISO 800, Aperture priority matrix metered, 1/1000th @ f/11
Raw, PS CC 2017 on Mac, full frame

I’ve retired my faithful 300/2.8 and TC20E and replaced them with the much lighter and more versatile 200-500/5.6. It arrived on Thursday, and this image is from my first field session on Friday. I am quite impressed and very happy with this lens.
This dove is nesting in a large saguaro cactus near the main parking lot at the Water Ranch, where scores of people pass by every day, with most of them not even noticing the bird or nest.

As with the majority of my images this is as much about the habitat as it is about the bird. I could have easily shot tighter at 500mm, moved in closer to this conditioned dove, or cropped the image. But I like seeing so much of the nest and the interesting folds of the cactus. I hope you like it as well.

I like your choice to include the cactus in your comp Richard. The detail is amazing, maybe just a touch bright for me. I like how the dove stacked the twigs for the nest. That must have hurt! Cool shot!

Hi Richard,
Very nice setting and very well composed. I think the frame is slightly overexposed. The colors are a little washed out.

Cheers,

Hisham.

Excellent composition and the framing with the cactus works well.  Gilbert Water Ranch is a treasure!

Interesting environment for this, Rich, looks like a very safe place to the nest.  The spines obviously provide a fine anchor for the nest.

This looks great, Rich.  I like the clear view of the bird and habitat.  Good luck with your new lens! devil

This is an impressive shot and the large view needs to be seen to appreciate it.  I like the detail in the cactus folds and needles.  Nice "rule of thirds" placement of the dove.  I've seen a lot of mourning doves, but never one nesting.  Good detail in the dove with a nice head turn.  Real nice habitat shot; your composition is much more interesting than a mere close-up of the dove.

Superb dof control, Richard.  It does look like Nikon has a winner with this lens.  I do wish Canon would come out with something at a decent price point, but I'm awfully happy with the Sigma, so I shouldn't complain.  A lovely habitat image and in this situation, I think you made a wise choice not to go any tighter.

Very well seen. I like your composition a lot, with the right amount of space surrounding the subject.
The light is a bit harsh.

Your choice of framing and the size of the crop are much clearer in the larger image.  The smoothness of the dove versus the contrast of its environment are fascinating.  I guess the dove feels quite protected by the cactus...
