Arizona Sunset

Place: Phoenix, AZ
Date: February 22, 2017 6:30 pm
Equipment: Nikon D7000, Nikkor AF-S 18-140/3.5-5.6 @140mm, hand held
Exposure: ISO 800, Aperture priority matrix metered, 1/160th @ f/16
Raw, PS CC 2017 on Mac, full frame

As I headed out for an errand this evening I had to detour to the nearest spot that had a decent foreground as the sky turned to fire. I keep this used body and refurbished lens around for “just in case” stuff while I’m out. I must confess I never even thought about the shooting parameters when I took this and was surprised to see what they were when I opened the image.

Beautiful desert scene!  No suggestions from me, just enjoying the image. Real sweet.

Richard, the sky is amazing. The silhouetted rolling landscape & saguaro? are perfect and do not need any detail beyond their outlines. Wonderful open desert setting sun scene......laugh

Feels like a lot of heat and looks verboten and mysterious, some classic slide day's look, I like it.

Great color and a very dramatic scene. The detail in the clouds shows much better in the large version. I like the various textures in the clouds.

I have the Nikkor 18-140mm, as well. For a 'kit' lens, it does an admirable job.

Richard,

I'm sure we've all chased that "sky on fire" scene and you did well to capture it!  On fire, indeed!  Hard to be critical in these situations... Could you have found a perfectly silhouetted saguaro?  Sure... but we can't call them up on demand....  I think your horizon line with the mountain is about as good as you might have found.  The sky is the story anyway, and kudos to you for being prepared for something like this!

Good day Richard,

I love the stunning light up top, man those oranges and reds are beautiful. The silhouetted land has some very nice shapes along the ridge that work wonderfully for myself.

Nothing like silhouetted saguaro's to say Arizona, Richard.  What a wonderful sky and excellent foreground.  The triangle of dark in the upper left "feels" heavy, what about some dodging to subtly bring out the cloudy bits in that area.
