Golden Plover
by Dennis Plank
We got back from an all too short week on Kauai a few days ago. It was primarily a winter break rather than a dedicated birding or photography trip, but I did take the gear along and get a few shots. This one was taken at the Taro Ponds at the Hanalei NWR. There's a cooperative effort to grow taro a variety of taro that likes a couple of inches of water and it supports at least five species endemic to the islands (a coot, a gallinule, a stilt, the Hawaiian duck and the Nene). In addition, Black crowned night herons are around and the Pacific Golden Plover in winter. If you happen to get out there, I recommend it. The people who farm the taro patches don't like you parking on the narrow dirt road which is on the left just after the first one lane bridge on the road up the east side of the island, but there's a small parking lot just before the bridge.
7Dii, Sigma 150-600 C @ 600 mm, f/7.1, 1/200, iso 1250, aperture priority, pattern metering. Processed in LR5 & CS6. Cropped some from the left and added canvas on the top ending up with an 18.2 MP 6x7. Taken at 8:23 AM on January 29th.
Comments and criticisms are very much appreciated.

Nice pose here, very sharp, and the raised leg adds a lot.
Very nice image.

Very nice image. Love the shallow DOF and the low shooting angle. Both work to push this image.
