Lake Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge sits on the NH - ME border between the White Mountains of NH and the western mountains of ME. I went for a sunrise kayak paddle surrounded by fog with nothing in view but the front of my boat. A wonderful silence accompanied me during my paddle as I stayed close to the rocky shore as it felt a bit scary to be out in the middle of the lake, unable to see anything around me. As the sun rose higher, fog began to clear and I could begin to make out features in the lake. Metallak Island emerged from the fog and I realized where I was on the lake. I paddled out toward the center of the lake as it came in, then out of view. I floated in this section of the lake watching the mist and fog create ever changing patterns of light.

This is a fabulous image with great symbolic value and mysticism. I like everything about it but I would experiment a bit with some variations. It has to do with the opening. I would try darkening both the blue sky and the sun to various degrees and see how that affects the overall mood of the image. Maybe just the sun itself.

I like this a lot!  This is a great example of when placing key elements in the center of the frame is ideal.  Of course the light is the star here.  Great capture!

Very mystical, Harry. The highlights  on the rising fog are wonderful. Liked your story too, don't wander too far from shore in the fog...

Love this Harry.  Too bad you can't pack a tripod aboard that kayak as I think this would even be more killer as a long exposure b/w. I think it would still make a very impactful b/w.  However, it does make a very compelling image as is.  In fact, it's damn good.  Mysterious and inviting at the same time.  The spot of light in front of the island and I particularly like the space in which you've allowed this image to breathe.  Very nice.

Great atmosphere and mood in this image, Harry.I like a lot the centrality of the subjects because it gives strength to the whole picture. The island does not look so inviting to reach... I hope that you decided for a different destination with your kayak cool
Well done, beautiful and mysterious image!

Excellent, Harry.
From the settings it appears you had some brighter light than the finished version. Nice PP to bring it down and give
it a nice mysterious look.

Yes Dan, the raw looked too yellow, which from my memory was not that warm. Initially I used cloudy WB, then changed to daylight to reflect more what I was seeing. Low contrast despite those highlights below island. Most of the histogram was in the middle. Didn't  want to blow any highlights so exposed a little darker. Processing could go many directions, may try others. Was a cinematic feel that morning which I tried to portray,  thought King Kong  might come off that island.

This is a very powerful, impactful image. The lighting is sublime and the simple, centered composition works beautifully. Processing looks good to me. Well seen.

Love your centered composition, Harry.  Works perfectly in my opinion.  The highlights in the fog, and the touch of light on the water add to the wonderful mood of the image.  Outstanding.

Harry, Wow, that is some wonderful light and I especially like that reflected light in front of the island and what it adds to the image. I like the mysterious mood of this very much. Looks as though it would have been pretty special being there to see and feel this.

Harry,

WOW, this is just fantastic.  Some times moments happen and all we can do is enjoy and appreciate them - just like I'm doing with this.  The image says it all, no critique necessary.

I love this, Harry. I think it is one of your best. My only suggestion would be to pull the cyan around the sun down a bit since it looks a little oversaturated on my monitor. Other than that minor tweak, I think this is beautiful.

A unique, interesting, and really cool image! It has the mysterious feel of moonlight rather than sunlight.  Well done.
