Pipe Dreams

A series of three winter storms swept across northern Arizona recently, leaving Flagstaff with 37" of fresh snow.  The short drive to the Grand Canyon was made as the second storm ended and third was to begin the next day.  The tail of the second storm provided for a nice departing sunset as seen from Pipe Creek vista.

Doug: One must view the large version to appreciate this fully. I especially love the spotlit mesas just below the clouds. Terrific leading lines and a wonderful color palette and comp. Superbly crafted image.>=))>

I love seeing snow in the GC and this is an interesting and unique view of the Canyon that I don't think I have seen before.  I like the "T" in the composition which creates an interesting symmetry.  The subtle glow at the intersection point of the "T" is like the cherry on top.  The light on the north rim is also very sweet!

Doug,

This is uniquely outstanding!  That "T" that Brian mentions to me is more like an optical illusion - very cool. Almost 3D like in the large view.  I love this.

The only teenie-tiny wish would be that the cut-off pine in the LLC wasn't there.  Almost not worth mentioning because IMHO, a crop, any crop is NOT a good option.  So I'm good with keeping it. :-)

A really interesting composition. The sharp V gunsight gives a lot of power and a great sense of perspective. The snowly contrast adds to the tension. Placing the V centrally was absolutely the right decision. The understated sky works well as a complement. The only issue is that the central 'thrust' leads to a darker vaguer area. I would dodge the distant snowless land and do a curve adjustment to add definition.

This is excellent. I love the channel leading me out to the great cloud. I am normally not a fan of blue/cyan snow, but it works really well for me in this image. Real sweet.

Awesome timing with the storm.  The snow gives this place a whole new feel.  Expansive.  Having been there this past fall, the view was familiar I think.  I was hoping for a return trip this winter to see it like this, but no such luck.  Now I see what I missed!  So much interest in the image, well composed and processed.

That's quite a view "down the slot", Doug.  The snow sure shows off the step-slope topography well even as it leads back to the canyon itself and the fine gentle colors in the clouds with the touches of sunlight on the distant mesas.

Really a graphic presentation, Doug.  Very cool.  I agree with Lon about the tree on bottom left.  Looks like it would be an easy clone.  Very minor, wonderful image.

Absolutely beautiful Doug. A view of the GC I've never seen before, and it's delicious.  As wonderful as this is, I this the processing would use a wee bit of tweaking to fully optimize it;  I might try Igor's suggestions to see what that does.  My suggestion would be to increase contrast in the sky a bit, but Igor's suggestion might handle that.

Superb image, Doug. Placement of the "V" is perfect to pull my eye into the beautiful background light. Processing looks great. Only thought would be to lightly burn down the brighter cliff face on the right.

Thank you for your comments. I have gone back and cloned out the tree branches in the LLC, and slightly reduced the blue in the snow.

Lovely and unique winter view. This time the centering works very well, and the pink clouds at the top of the "gap" reward the viewer. How nice to have a short drive to the Grand Canyon! The sky and interesting dusting of snow really make this one special.
