Winter Moss Garden

With all our rain, winter is the season for mosses and lichens in the Pacific Northwest.  I liked the combination of that thought with the heavy frost from yesterday morning's freezing fog.  And, yes, this old fence post has been featured in quite a few of my previous posts of one sort or another.

5DIII, EF180mm f/3.5L, tripod and cable release, 9 image stack with all images at f/13, 1/50 sec iso 400, aperture priority, pattern metering.  Stacked in Zerene Stacker (DMap in this case), further processing in LR5 & CS6.  Cropped a bit off the top and left due to a band of some artifact from the stacking along those edges.  Taken at 10:08 yesterday morning in the fog.

Comments and criticisms are always appreciated.

Thanks,

Dennis, the details in the frosty moss are great, as is having that knothole to show off the foggy background.  Are your edge artifacts related to the order of the stack?  If the first image in the stack is the furthest focus, then the closer focus views don't include quite as much area, leaving edge artifacts (should be all around though) that need to be cropped.  Coincidentally, I was shooting moss stacks yesterday also.

Well it sure looks cold!  I like the detail and composition.  Good idea to use an image stack on this one.  I only wish I could see a larger version on my monitor.  The knothole is really kind of spooky with the fog in the background.

This is wonderful, with all those textures and frosty lichens and mosses. The hole in the fence post adds a lot of interest. I might consider a crop below the upper right corner or maybe a clone to fill that area as it draws my eye a little. Lovely colors, too.

Dennis, I love this little wreath scene. Amazing number of different lichen and mosses. Nicely touched by a bit of frost.
