Coastal Crawler

While exploring the nearby Redwoods, I stayed in the coastal town of Trinidad and came upon this slimy fellow during a hike along the foggy coast.  This banana slug was one of the smaller ones I saw, but more photogenic in its surroundings.

Nikon D810, 16-35mm, f13, fill flash, ISO 640.

The leading line of the fern leaf work well here, Harry.  You've also got the slug well placed in the image.  I do think you can crop the top 1/3 to 1/2 of the trees and sky and still tell the same story.  Looks like a fun/gooey find.

Harry,

Excellent comp.  The fill flash worked quite well with no distracting bright spots.  Did you use a polarizing filter by chance?  Well donedevil........................Jim

Hi Jim - I can't remember, but I don't think I did.  It was pretty dark, so I didn't want any longer shutter speed than needed because that slug did move more than I expected.  I dialed the built in flash down to -1.7 so as not to overpower and look artificial, but I can detect a slight shadow behind the slug.  On a side note, it looks like you had or have a Bernese Mnt Dog. I had one too, a great companion.  Also adopted a Tibetan Mastiff from a shelter near us. A lot of fu in the house at one time!

Great point of view and composition. Good blend of a sharp banana slug and a foggy, humid environment. Nicely done!
