Late Autumn

An image made in early November, after peak color here in central CT, but I like the contrast of the late, muted colors with the lone bright yellow tree. 5d2, 400mm, f8, 1/8s, ISO 100.

Craig,

Fantastic autumn image.  The mix of muted reds, oranges and browns indeed provide a great stage for the lone tree with it's yellow leaves.  I love this as presented, but have a couple thoughts to consider.  The first, I think you could pull back the brightness of the yellow tree a tad. It's not overexposed by any stretch, but the top half of the tree is a little brighter and more yellow than the lower part. The contrast in color is plenty to keep the separation with the bg, so brightness isn't really needed.  The second thing is just an alternative.  You could make this a real nice autumn abstract by simply eliminating the water and shore entirely; that adds a little mystery in that the image could have been on a hillside, for example.  Even without cropping, you might consider deepening the blacks in the reflection for a little extra contrast. but that's minor.

Very well seen, a beautiful autumn image.

Nice job bringing the yellow out of the somewhat muted reds.

Lon's recommendations seem good to me.

Beautiful image, Craig. Wonderful past-peak rusty colors. I do like Lon's suggestion about cropping the water, but this is certainly well composed as is as you have nice nice color and reflections in the water.

For me, the off-centered single yellow tree and the sliver of rippled water across the bottom work well.

Thanks all for the comments. Lon, I agree that the upper part of the yellow tree is too light, so I darkened it a bit, and the water as well. Better now?

Nice details in the larger version.  There's some gorgeous colors in there.  I like all the different shades of red, and that single yellow tree stands out nicely. Well done.

Craig, your second version works wonderfully to me. I really enjoy to explore all the details and the reflection complements the foliage nicely to my eye.

A really nice fall image, Craig. The repost is spot on.  Like Lon, I liked the idea of cropping the reflection and shoreline off, but only as an alternative.
