Sandstone Abstract

by Phil Pogledich

Gallery: LandscapePosted December 17, 2016374 views11 comments
This is an abstract of the colorful sandstone patterns at one of my favorite coastal locations in northern California. It's part of an ongoing project of mine.  I don't know how easy it is for viewers to relate to this type of image...abstract images don't get a lot of attention in general, but NPN is always a good forum for this type of image.

Thanks in advance for any comments or critiques.

Great textures and colors in this one, Phil. I think this is called Tafoni, a special kind of sandstone found all over the world and is plentiful on the California coast. At first I thought the dark areas were rust, but then realized they were part of the sandstone. I might try lightening the bottom half of the image just to give us a better look at all that is there, but also to balance out the light areas at the top of the image. It's enjoyable just to wander through the image, discovering all the forms, textures and colors.

A stunning abstract of this tafoni, Phil.  Love your composition and the color and textures.  Perhaps some every so slight selective dodging of the midtones of the lower right hand quadrant might be helpful in getting the luminosity in tune with the other areas; also burning the brighter area along the top to right of center that seems to grab the eye a bit.  I'm being quite picky though, as this is gorgeous as it stands.  Would love to find some tafoni like this in our area.  Outstanding work.

Thanks Kathy and Vance.  Tafoni is a term for the holes and similar features in the sandstone, as I understand it.

The textures and details in the large version are thoroughly enjoyable and let my eye wander around the image taking it all in, Phil. My only suggestion; and this is being super picky; is to tone down the ULC just a touch to bring it closer to the tones of the rest of this fascinating beach abstract. Great eye to spot this one.

Phil,

From afar, this could have been tree bark or perhaps even some leaf litter... but upon closer review, the wonderful textures are revealed in the sandstone.  A fascinating display and as others have mentioned, this is great to explore all the details, shapes and textures.  The earth tones are wonderful as is the soft, dappled light ( I think really takes this up a notch.)

The darker shapes in the center area could easily be seen as rusted metal.  Great find, capture and processing is spot on.

Phil: Reminds me of the work of Anil Rao so I hope you take that as the high compliment intended. Superbly composed and lit and the textures and shapes are indeed marvelous. Most excellent.>=))>

Thanks to everyone for the comments.  Bill, I appreciate the comment...I remember Anil's work very well and have reviewed it to make sure I'm taking my own approach to this subject.

Hi Phil,

I love the textures and colors in this fine intimate capture. The intimate of sandstone is often overlooked, but you saw and captures a beautiful image. I really appreciate these intimate scenes the more I live on this planet. I like it as is, and can't think of a way to improve it. Wait, maybe the idea of toning down the brighter areas in the image could improve on an already sweet capture.

Beautiful capture
