November Birch

My last sunrise picture didn't look as much like the November moods I have really been after so I decided to post one more for the third week. This one is the same birch grove that I shot in week 3 for last year. I decided to go back and try it again. A different look this time with the later fall we have had but I did enjoy it with a little color as well.
Happy Thanksgiving to all of you. Nick

Nick, I am really enjoying this. The large version shows the detail much better than the small one. The birches against the red trees work very well together. You did a fine job with this.

Great photo! If that is your vignetting at work, well done.

I like a lot this, Nick. I love how the birches "shine" over the darker trees. Your result is something that I am still looking for and that I enjoy. I would like to have the larger version on my wall. Well done!

Beautiful capture, Nick. Those elegant birches standout beautifully against the darker background. I might back off the vignetting slightly.

Lovely!  The vignetting is working for me. Real sweet image, with the stark whites, bold colors and dark to offset.

Very nice combination of stark form and color, Nick. As mentioned by others, the processing is excellent to highlight the birch trees.

This view certainly looks like late fall, Nick, with the white tree trunks, and the dark, unsaturated oranges and reds of the few remaining leaves.  The larger view shows the details and the colors much better.  To my eyes, the vignetting, especially along the top, seems a bit heavy.

I like the contrast between the brighter trees in the foreground and the fading autumn color in the background.  Although there is a lot going on in this scene the contrasting tones really make this work well.

Nick, this image is a wonderful piece of subjective nature photography for me. It is a pleasure for me to explore all the delicate details and structures. I think the vignetting fits in well with your interpretation of the scene.

Nick,

I thought these trees looked familiar. ;-)  I remember your posts from last year.  This is wonderful!  I love the natural (or enhanced?) vignetting you've got with this image.  The bare trees really stand out.  I imagine a b&w rendition would work too, but the warm autumn colors surrounding the birch are too good to discard.

The only minor thought I have would be to desaturate the blue in this image to mitigate the blue sky peeking through up top. I love the warm/blue color combination, but in this case there's just not enough blue to enjoy or contrast with the warm tones, so you might consider toning down the blue so it's not a factor at all.  Just a thought.

Thanks to all of you for your comments on this. The vignetting is part natural and part me as I was trying to draw the attention to the birches. I probably could back it off a bit and see how it works.
Lon, I'll try toning down the blue and see if it helps. Thanks all, Nick

The vignette effect works superbly here, Nick.  Beautifully composed, with those deep russet tones surrounding the birches setting them off really well.

The birch stand out nicely against the back drop.  The blue sky is a minor distraction in the uniformity of the image - often this has to be shot from above to avoid any sky in the image while including the complete trees.  I ran into this myself this past fall.  Maybe a BW conversion would work well for the contrast in the image, though very nice as is.  I do like the leaning posture of the trees, gives a more dynamic feel to the image.

Paul and Harry, Thanks guys! Very nice getting your thoughts on this.
Harry, I think you are right about images like this needing to be shot from a higher vantage point to include the trees but no sky. Maybe I need to get a platform on top of my Toyota 4 Runner kind of like Ansel did on his old station wagon...cool Actually there are times when that would be pretty handy! Thanks guys, Nick

To be honest, Nick, I could never get past the leaning of the trees, all in parallel. I notice that some thought this as a positive but it didn't work for me on this one.
