Sunlight on Valdez
by Gary Minish
A brilliant winter day at Valdez, Alaska. Shooting directly into the sun, especially when including the sun in the scene usually doesn't work very well but i had to give it a try anyway. I used the Sony's 3 shot, bracketed, in camera blend feature to deal with the extreme dynamic range of the scene. There were some light clouds in front of the sun which helped keep it from getting to far out of hand. The amazing thing is that you can shoot this 3 shot image hand held and the camera aligns the image perfectly and blends the 3 exposures as good as I've ever been able to do it manually. It spits out 2 images, the single shot at the exposure settings of the camera at the time you triggered it and the finished 3-exposure blend. I cropped it slightly into a panorama format for composition. The large version is much better.
UPDATE: After I posted this I realized that I had made a mistake on how this image was created. While I did take a single wide angle photo of this scene using the bracketed exposure blend feature of the camera, this is not that photo. This one was a stitched panorama from 3 vertical photos, each one of the 3 created with the in-camera bracketed blend. I knew I would probably want to print this scene and the 3 vertical photos makes for a much larger print with lots more detail. Essentially, this image is comprised of 9 separate exposures.
