Mt. Baker Sunrise

Here's another image of Mt. Baker from my backpacking trip in August. This was at sunrise the following morning. Backcountry camping is not allowed in this area, so I was camped about 1/2 mile and 400 feet below this spot. I awoke a little late and really had to hustle up here for sunrise when I saw the light breaking. In my haste, I left my wide angle behind, and could not shoot any wider than 24 mm, but I was happy to have had such amazing light. D600, 24-85 @ 24, f16, iso 200, 2 sec, hh GNDs. Suggestions and other comments welcome.

Looks like we've both been chasing crystal sunrise reflections! I'm not sure what the view would have been with the wide-angle, but this works very well as is. Nice fire in there; I'm surprised the mountain didn't pick up more of the warmer tinge. The white makes for a nice contrast.

Thanks for comment, John. Yes, I though I'd get some glow and color on the mountain, but it never happened. I guess the sun was just coming up too much behind the mountain.

Scott,

Gorgeous alpine sunrise.  Love it when the sky turns to fire like this and you chose a great spot resulting in a fabulous composition. No nits or suggestions, just enjoyment.

Hi Scott, a wonderful still sunrise. An honest post wrt to the wide angle enlightened ... Actually, I think the extra details available form this somewhat closer 'crop' actually make the image. Certainly, much wider and the mountain and trees would have been much less impressive components in the composition. Like it!

Wow, those are amazing sunrise colors, Scott.  I'm especially attracted to the visual contrast with the snow on Mt. Baker having a distinct b&w feeling.  I do see some hints of color in a few spots on the snow.  There's a good balance between the land and the sky/reflection here, that a wider view may not have allowed.

Very calm and peaceful image. The trees balance the mountain and give a point of interest.

Sweet light along with a wonderful combination of warm and cool colors, Scott. I think this one might be my favorite from your backpacking trip. The reflection also works beautifully in this alpine scene.

Awesome Scott.  Well worth the hustle to get there.  I think sometimes when we restrict our options, it makes us see clearer and really focus on what is possible with what we've got.  Very nice, love that the trees play a more prominent role than they would have with a wider lens.  Love the whole series and what a trip you had.

Sweet image - great colours, reflection, and the contrast with the white mountain-tops is beautiful.

Very nicely balanced composition.  Nice colors.  I think the mountain didn't pick up much of the warm tones because most of the color is behind it.  But I think the white contrast really makes this picture better.  Mel Baker is certainly a beautiful spot.
