Mining District

This area of mixed, largely pine and beech woodland lies on a sandstone outcrop at Alderley Edge in Cheshire.  The sandstone was mined for copper from prehistoric times up to the Roman period, and a cutting can be seen at bottom R of the image.

Well made image, Ian! It is balanced so sweetly to my taste. There is much of interest here besides the history. The old pine on the left, for example—what caused it to break terminal dominance (I suspect wind damage) at what had to be an early age.

I really like this! Cracking good photo!devil

Beautiful autumn light, Ian. It is remarkable that the cutting is still so clearly visible after 2000 years - has it been used for other purposes since then? The color palette and low angle light cry out "autumn" loud and clear!!

Alberto : thanks for the comment.  There are many cuttings at this site, most of which have had to be excavated.  There are, however, written records of some mining even as late as the early twentieth century !

I really like this scene, Ian!  Lots to look at in those big trees and it tapers off to the distance, providing a good sense of depth.  Great light and your exposure & composition are both excellent.  Very nice!
