Puma with Cubs

One of the many, many wonderful encounters I had with wild pumas in Chile earlier this year.

We had seen a mother with three cubs on the very first day of our trip.  Two days later, the cubs were dead, having been killed by an adult male cat.  Much of the group was pretty crestfallen after making that gruesome discovery, so it was a pleasant (and almost necessary) surprise to find another female puma with three young cubs a day later!

This family was fairly shy, so in this case our best chance to get shots of the family occurred from a ridgeline across from them as they sunbathed.  We had to scramble pretty quickly down the slope once they settled here.  I tried to line myself up in a spot where the herd of guanacos in the background would appear in the frame.  I had almost too much lens (using a crop body as well), but this was the only chance to get the full foursome looking into the sun and our direction.  Almost immediately afterward, the cubs began to squirm and move.

Neat angle on this beautiful family.  I love how they clearly have the "high ground" with their prey in the background, but I do wish the guanacos were just a tad more recognizable; hard with such a long lens I know.  Gorgeous animals; teh cubs look all ears.

Wow, Max.  That's very neat.  The guanacos in the BG add to the shot, and the cubs being lined up like that is really special.  Congratulations on a well-seen and executed image.

Max: what an enjoyable shot. I really the pose of the family, especially so with their prey in the background. Congrats! Richard

Hi Max, like the 'animalscape' style of image here and cool to have all the faces looking to you. I trust you also managed to get some close ups of Mum & the cubs too?

Steve, thanks.

This mother was fairly shy and kept her cubs a far distance away, but I managed a few shots that were closer.  We were very fortunate that the cubs were curious enough when we first came upon them that they ventured closer on their own, allowing us some closer photos.  Of course, we encountered several other pumas that allowed us much closer photo ops.  It was a fantastic trip.
