Regal Buck

I thought this Lamar Valley buck was unusually regal in this particular shot. I particularly like the detail in the face and horns. Looks almost three-dimensional. Processed using Lightroom CC (2015) and Photoshop CC (2015.5) along with Light Craft's LightZone. Comments and critiques welcome.

Awesome dynamic pose and the distant background does seem to add a 3D aspect to the image.

Well taken a fine image.  Good color and great detail in the face and body of the pronghorn.  To me it does seem just a tad low contrast, but could be my monitor.  Thanks for sharing.

The lighting, pose, and color coordination here are great, Jerry.  An outstanding catch.

Jerry,
Thanks for this fine image, I wonder if a tad of contrast would improve?

Thanks everyone for the comments. The less than stellar contrast of this image is due, in part, to the smoke from the fires close to the Lamar Valley. That day, a haze hung over the entire valley. I have boosted the contrast a little, but this does indeed represent reality that day,

Jerry, I really dig this pose and the clean BG is a lot harder to get on these stags than a lot of people realize. They move fast and usually don't like people. I agree with Ken about the contrast and understand your comment on the fire. Do you have the latest version of Lightroom? If yes, try to give the entire image a boost using the new dehaze slider (it is all the way on the bottom right of the "Basic" slider while in the Develop mode). It is perfect for this. I have used it during smoke filled shots as well and was amazed at how simple it fixes these type of images. Let me know what you think and would love to see a repost.

Kurt, thanks for the suggestion. I tried the dehaze slider and it seems to help. See what you think.

Hey Jerry,

Very nice! I agree with your comments on the pose...very regal!

I'm going to be a bit of an iconoclast here - if I had to choose between the original post and the re-post I'd go for the original. I like the added contrast on the subject in the re-post (except perhaps in the facial region), but I don't like what it did to the foreground and like even less what it did to the background. Based on what I'm seeing I'm assuming the use of the dehaze filter was done globally? When it comes to contrast-tweaking it's my view it should almost always be done selectively.

My biggest wish for the image is actually something no one else has mentioned...that the OOF bush in the centre foreground (looks like rabbitbush) wasn't there! Not a big deal (especially with your "signature" there), but without it the entire foreground would nicely lead to those attractive bushes near the buck's hooves.

Cheers...

Brad
