Above the Mineral

I had spent the last week of July in the San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado.  Plans were to meet friend John M  for the first night, as I have been longing for a showcase sunrise at one location after several morning attempts in past years.  This view may have made my favorite image of the week however.  A blend of 2 exposures for depth of field.  As always, any nits and suggestions are welcome.

Beautiful photo!  I especially love the way the foreground flowers (columbine?) complement the tones in the grey sky and bring the picture together.

Beautiful  alpine scene. I'm  viewing on a smartphone, but the sky looks  magenta to me. Maybe the phone.  Looks like a good year  for flowers up there.

Beautiful - the diffused light really enhances the color.  The clouds have a lot of interesting texture as well.  I like this one a lot!  I need to get back out to the San Juans again!

Doug, What a wonderful view. I really like the foreground flowers and the rest of the scene falls right in place beautifully. Your dof blending work very nice and I'm just enjoying the feel this has. There is a bit of magenta in the clouds but I really don't mind that. Very nice work on this!

Thanks all for the replies.  The clouds were a blah gray and I tried to add just a little esthetic color.  I have thought of a little crop of the clouds to just below the brighter area along the top middle left edge; either that or darken that spot.

Great comp and I love the softbox quality light under overcast skies. I dont see much of the magenta here, I thnk the colors are spot on

Beautiful image, Doug.  Well thought out and presented.  I really like that you went vertical  here.   Very nice.  The colors look fine to me.

This turned out rather nicely, Doug. I like the drama in the sky and the subtle lighting is perfect for showcasing those FG flowers. Beautiful alpine image.

Sweet mountain scene. A classic alpine summer image.

Wow, I think I saw a similar comp from Ryan Dyar a couple of days back. This is a fantastic alpine image, Doug. Really like the arrangement of flowers you have here. The sky is a bit too magenta for my taste, so I'd reduce the cast there. Overall, I really like this image.

Gorgeous scene, Doug. Very well composed. A minor nit but I would also pull the magenta out of the clouds.

Yea, I can see why you wanted to liven up the clouds with some color. Personal taste for sure, but I like how the compliment the columbine colors. In many ways a cloudy sky that is not distracting sets off the land much better. Well done!
