Repos and Wider Views Palouse #7

Here is another abstract, extracted from a larger shot, from my trip to the Palouse.  I think I underutilized my 100-400mm on that trip. Many of the images I most enjoy are significant crops from larger scenes.  I'll gladly show the "zoomed out" steps from this one if folks are interested.  In the mean time, let me know what you think of this.  I like the loss of scale, the illusion that it could perhaps be a curved leaf of foliage from a lily or iris, or perhaps a rolling field miles across.

I like the narrow and widening flow.  The word venturi came to mind.  The dark edge along the top left seems a little incongruous with the other edges.

I like it.  My only small nit is the dark edge that Doug pointed out.

This is horizontal country with many opportunities for abstract long focus compositions. Such is also a natural for pieced panoramas if one wanted a large image.

Nice!

Thanks everyone.  I tried to get rid of the dak edge through cloning, but it's not working well.  I'll tinker with changing its exposure or saturation to minimize it as a distraction.

There is something very sensuous about the curves and light in this image.  I really like it.   Simple and softly graphic. Very nice.

Thanks everyone.  This might be one of those lessons in thinking abstract in the field. it is a significant crop, and the only convincing way I could reduce that line entering from the left was to darken the top hillside so it would blend and crop off its fattest segment.

Here is that effort. Let me know what you think.  I'll also share a wider view so you can see how hard a crop this was.  Not sure how useful it is except as an exercise in abstract composition.

Here is the wider comp, still cropped a tish from the bottom. There were many things in this scene that were problematic: the many tire tracks, the patch of square on the distant butte (Kamiak Butte) and a curve of road I badly cloned out middle left.  Thanks everyone for your thoughts on this.

The wide view is truly beautiful. I can see why you chose that section to focus on for an abstract but the broader view is also really marvelous. I think I may like it more. Sorry.

I also prefer the wider view, Marlynne. I would try to darken the sky just a bit and possibly crop the near foreground, or darken it as well. Of the cropped versions, I prefer the revised one with the darkened section across the top.

Thanks folks. As always, you are giving me great feedback and honest impressions.  Here is another crop I tried before going to the full abstract.  It sounds like this one might hit the sweet spot.  I can continue working the sky a bit if you think it needs it.

The pictures and all the comments are great for learning something about comp/abstracts. Thanks.
In my opinion the last crop is the best.
