Morning on the River

I haven't been on here for a little while now but it sure is nice getting back and seeing what is here. Always fun seeing some new works from the people on NPN.
I just returned yesterday from a photo trip in Upper Michigan where I met up with Tom Haxby (love his photography) and we had a great time. I had a small tent and it felt good being back using it again. It had been a couple of years since I last used it or maybe a bit longer.
This is a picture I made last Friday in the early morning light on the Presque Isle River in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness Area. I decided to try some longer exposures and this one was 8 sec. with the use of a 6 stop ND filter. Thanks for looking and any thoughts you have. Canon 5D3, 24-105L @65mm, ISO 100, F/16, 8 sec.with 6 stop ND.
Larger version included for best look.

Nice to have you back, Nick.  I really like the long exposure here.  The light is superb, and the birch trunks draw my eye right thru the image.  It feels a little right tipped to me and other than that I love it.

Thanks Gary! I thought it was level but I got the same feeling looking at it here. The slant of the rock adds to that feel I'm sure. Probably could have rotated it a bit and if I print it I will do that.
I saw Jim Becia this morning and he mentioned that he had seen you and Harley. He was doing the art fair show in Spring Green, WI. and won best photography of the show...which he deserved.

Beautiful morning light on the winding creek, Nick. Certainly looks like an inviting area for camping and photography. Agree that the image appears tilted to the right.

This is wonderfully composed, Nick.  Agree with a bit of tilt correction, but the exposure is nice.  For such scenes I prefer a faster shutter, but nice you were able to retain details in the FG.

Rotated a bit with this one. I think the slant of the rock adds to the tilted feel but this one might feel better. Thanks for the help.

The winding river draws me nicely through the image. Great control of the dynamic range with the GND.devil

Nice meander in the river and you handeled the range of light well.

Very nice Nick, has a lovely feel and sweep to it.  As the image loaded top to bottom, the composition still works quite well with bottom crop.

Thanks for sharing!

Love the light, all the rock layers, and the S curve of the river here, Nick.  The tilted rocks and the tilted birch trees at the back do create a strong sense that the image is tilted, but the trees in the upper right corner clearly say otherwise.  It's a great, intimate view that speaks well to a quiet, private moment along a beautiful stream.

Love the S curve of the river through the fascinating rock, and that spotlighting of those trees really makes this glow, Nick.  Outstanding.  Great work handling the highlights in the sunlit area.

Hi Nick,
it is the amazing light that draws me in here, and the dynamics of the flow together with the shapes of the rocks keep me exploring the whole image. Your second version indeed seems better balanced to my eye. I like this juxtaposition of diverse elements.

Glad to have you back, Nick. The long exposure with ND filter works beautifully as does that light highlighting the trees on the right side. I especially like that bit of reflected color in the water in the LRC.

The S curve really pulls me in.  The dappled light on the trees is well presented too.

Wonderful flow to the river and the touch of reflected trees is beautiful little detail.  In an image like this, i often try to level the top of the falls and use this as a reference for level and see how the rest of the image shakes out.  This is where a viewer will look for a reference of level. Dig it.

This is excellent. The zigzag in the river provides a wonderful leading line pulling my eye through the image. The darker rendering works very well giving the image a bit of intrigue. Nice job.
