Rufous in Flight

I managed to catch this Rufous Hummingbird hovering near one of our feeders.  I'd replaced the plastic perches they come with with a juice bottle cap with holes in it for mounting more natural perches.  I'd started with bachelor buttons, since my wife has an enormous number of them but they were a little too wimpy even for hummingbirds, so they would hover above them to drink and occasionally back away.  This was one of those occasions.  It did require quite a bit of cloning to remove the "perch" and the edge of the feeder.

7DII, Sigma 150-600 C @ 562 mm, Wimberley Sidekick on Z1 ballhead on RRS legs, f/6.3, 1/1250, iso 800, aperture priority, pattern metering, -1/3 EV.  Processed in LR5 & CS6.  Cropped to a 4x5 horizontal.  Full height.  Taken June 10th at 6:19 AM.

Comments and criticisms are welcome and appreciated.

Thanks,

All your cloning work paid off very well here, Dennis. The background is really lovely and the bird is so nice and sharp. Plus the light is so sweet on the bird.

Good catch of the action.  I like the position of the wings in this hummer image.  Also like the BG.  Thanks for sharing.

My preference for these types of shots is for there to be a certain amount of blur in the wings but sharpness in the rest of the hummer rather than complete sharpness.  This I really like.

A very nice, clean capture of this Rufous, Dennis.  Good job cleaning up the background.  You're quite the accomplished hummer photographer.  devil

You nailed this one. Sharp eyes, a little wing motion, and he pops nicely from the background.

Hi Dennis
Nice grab, Hummingbirds are hard to photograph.

Splendid image, Dennis. Both the light and background are fabulous and you got a great up-wing pose from the hummingbird. The cloning is well done - I can't see any evidence of the feeder. devil
