This shot was also taken on Lieutenant River, Ct. using a tripod.  I cropped the shot by 20%, I brought up the shadows and add a little clarity in Lightroom 5. It is good to back out photographing birds.

The light wasn't doing you any favors, but overall the exposure is good with a possible hot spot on the outside of the right leg. The action captured is very good. And good to see you posting again, Peter.

Nice timing, Peter, to catch this takeoff position.  The bird looks just a tiny bit soft, so I suspect the AF didn't quite keep up with it, which often seems to be a problem for me on takeoff shots.  Still the intent look and dynamic pose make this an excellent image.

A good action shot it but as has already been pointed out the light was difficult. You've done a good job in making it work especially in the larger detailed image.
