Male Rufous Hummingbird

Looks like it's time for hummingbirds.  We've had a mob lately, particularly in the evenings.  I took a distant shot of one of our four-hole feeders last night with 7 hummingbirds at it.  One of our feeder stations has two feeders mounted to a double shepherd's crook and this guy was trying to hog both of them last night.  I was a little further from it and at more of an angle away from the sun than I liked because the sun slants across the flower gardens in the evening.  Eventually I figured out how to set up in the garden without destroying it, but by then he'd moved on and the late sun was obscured by a cloud.  In any case, I really liked the colors on the gorget, the open beak which I don't recall seeing before, and the side lighting on the bird.

7D2, Sigma 150-600 C @ 600mm, Z1 ballhead and Wimberley sidekick on RRS legs,  f/9, 1/400, iso 640, aperture priority, pattern metering, -1EV to tame the gorget.  Processed in LR5 & CS6.  I isolated the shaded part of hte hummer and brought it up about 1/2 stop to compensate for the initial negative compensation.  Cropped to 7.3 MP before resizing.  Taken at 7:40 pm yesterday.

Your comments and criticisms are always appreciated.

Thanks,

A really lovely picture of this hummingbird, Dennis!  I love the way you got that great lighting angle and that amazing gorget.  And nature has it right with the complementary green speckles on the head.  The whole color palette of this works beautifully.  This is really nice--well done!  devil

The light really sets off the colors in the gorget wonderfully.  A beautiful look at this little bird, Dennis.

You have the sun angle beautifully positioned to show off this bird's colorful gorget Dennis. And you still managed some catchlight on the hummer's eye. Well done.

Excellent, Dennis. Good color palette, and nice techs and you nailed that sheen. Lovely.

The reds and golds of the gorglet really blamed quite nicely with the background. Nice pose. I'm still waiting to see the gorglet color on the Rufous in my neighborhood.  There are now two or three Rufous hummingbirds hanging around my house and the Anna's appear to have disappeared finally. For a while they were still sticking to the feeders while the Rufous was spending time in the honeysuckle.  As the flowers change in the garden it will be interesting to see what happens. It is my understanding that we only have two species of hummingbirds here in the Pacific Northwest.
