Happy Mother's Day

"All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother."   -- Abraham Lincoln

The next two generations of my family have left after today's celebrations, so I am taking a few minutes to wish all of you a happy Mother's Day, with this look at a mother Common Loon and her chick.  It was wonderful sitting motionless in my kayak as the dedicated parents hunted around me and continually fed their always-hungry chick with fish and crayfish.

I posted this on NPN in 2009, but back then we did not have personal galleries.  Between then and now, the image has been a favorite, and has appeared in the New York State Conservationist Magazine,
so I am posting it again over six years later to put it in my NPN gallery.

Canon 50D;  Canon 100-400 mm.
f/7.1 @ 1/500 sec.; ISO 400
26% of full frame.
Hand-held from Kayak.

Thank you Wayne, and right back to you. My wife and daughter in law just ran a half marathon today, on mother's day of all days. Love your post here. Wonderful light and intimate subjects.

You captured a sweet moment here Wayne. I always wonder if one should remove the specular highlights in the water if they are distracting. (Something to think about.)  It seems to be a judgment call. Great work!

Nice portrait of these two Wayne. I like the low POV and interaction between chick and mom. Only nit is I wish the mother had a bit more head turn toward the viewer, but still a very nice image.
