Background
by Dennis Plank
This was an attempt to tailor the background the Goldfinch was placed against. We had a wonderful bloom of Camas this year and it occurred to me that it would be nice to get a Goldfinch against the blue/purple bg of a field of oof Camas. Unfortunately, I'm usually shooting slightly up at the birds, so I don't get ground behind them. To get this shot, I set up a ladder in front of our main feeder station. It has an old split fence rail as a crossbar that we hang the feeders from and the birds often perch on the crossbar while waiting for an opening. By shooting from the ladder I was able to get the angle I wanted. Unfortunately, by the time I thought of all this, I had to wait a couple of days for decent evening light and the Camas passed it's prime so the intensity of the bg isn't what I had really envisioned. Nonetheless, I like the combination of tones.
