Here Come The Lions

by Ken Watkins

Gallery: WildlifePosted April 29, 2016122 views12 comments
During an early morning in Savute, we firstly found the Lions hunting Buffalo very badly, further along we found the Wild Dog pack huddled under a bush, After their miserable failure the sub-adult Lions saw the Dogs and decided to give chase, pathetic really as they had very little chance of catching any, and they did not.
Here a Wid Dog observes them attempting to sneak up,

Wonderful capture! We saw the wild dogs a number of times, luckily, but never doing anything very interesting.
Perfect exposure, composition, head-turn, and pose.
Exceptional!

Ken: definitely unique and one of the most interesting photos I've ever seen of a wild dog. The pose, composition and techs are spot on. Good one! Richard

This is a really good capture -- great to get it standing and keeping it so sharp.  I imagine it is a descendent of one of the two packs that had a territorial squabble right around our vehicle in Savute on a safari back in 1997.  It was an extraordinary wildlife encounter, unfortunately before I had taken up serious nature photography!

Good behavioural shot Ken - well-timed and the light is pretty darned sweet as well. Tiny shame about the OOF grasses in the lower-left corner, but they definitely aren't a deal-breaker...

Thanks everybody for your kind comments, they are much appreciated. I have been trying to get this image since my first sighting of Wild dog in Botswana in 1999, there is no doubt that digital has come to my aid.

A really nice image and look at behavior, Ken.  The lighting is superb.  Photos like this remind me of just how tough nature can be.

Great image.  Love the pose and the light.  Unfortunate that he is on a road and has a road in the background.
