Little Hunter

Thought I'd share this fierce little hunter that Jenaya, Marlise, Josiah and I found in the mountains on the return from our owl and waterfowl trip to British Columbia this spring. We actually found a pair, and at one point while photographing the female the male appeared from out of nowhere and they mated...not sure how many times I can anticipate being completely set up with carefully chosen angles, comp, lighting and focus and techs and have that transpire in front of our lenses, but we didn't complain! I'm sure you'll see a couple frames from that sequence in the future.

Although I do have plenty of images with more eye contact, I loved the intensity shown here as the male locked onto what might have been a meal in the underbrush below him, and I thanked him many times for choosing this lovely cedar sapling as one of several perches he hunted from.

This is nearly full-frame with one cedar sprig removed from the top right.

Your time, comments, suggestions and critiques are much appreciated! Please view the larger version for best quality.

John, I love this kind of image! It's not perfect; the lighting is strong, but well handled, and I wish more of the owl's eyes were apparent, but the stark truth of "Nature red in tooth and claw" is subtly seen in the body language of the owl. A marvelous depiction of wildness and a ripping good story!devil

Excellent, John.  You handled the back lighting very well and I like what it does to the foliage of the cedar.  The pose of the owl is perfect.  I look forward to seeing some of your other shots from this session.

Love the comp on this one John. I wish the head was tilted a tiny bit less to see those eyes a little better, but love the fact he is looking down and has me curious where and what he is looking at. So it still works perfectly fine, just a wish. Nice work!

Hi John,

Nice lighting and the BG has enough separation to show off the owl well. Well done...................................Jim

John: it's wonderful when things come together and they have here. The light, pose and the background are all top notch. Richard
