Lipan Gold #1

Had the pleasure of a way too short afternoon visit to the Grand Canyon last Sunday where I was able to scout some views suggested by Doug Koepsel and settle in to watch the sunset from Lipan Point.  I've got two shots that I keep switching between favorites, so I thought I post both to see what others think.  Both are two shot composites to get detail in the foreground and hold the color in the sky.  (5D3, 70-200 f2.8 @ 80mm, f/9, 1/80s & 1/320s, iso 200, tripod)

I see that Jim has fixed the comment upload so that a 1Mb file can be used.  This lets you use the arrows on the larger versions to jump back and forth.  Thank you, Jim.

Based on your suggestions, I've reworked the first view and uploaded it to my web site.  To see that version, click the purchase print button.

Love the hazy light filtering down, lends a great mood to the image. Beautiful scene. I can't really decide between the two. I really like both. Win/win.

I'd crop just above that little ledge catching the light in the second version. The light rays are perfect for this landscape.

The large version looks crazy! The darkness and shapes of the land gives it such a eerie feeling, and combined with the solar rays makes for a fantastic photo. A real joy to explore this!

For me, #1 is the winner for me on several accounts!

I agree with Harley here  Mark.  Win/win for sure.  Love the haze and you embraced it very well.  I think if it were mine I might either crop the little bit of sky top right that has some broken clouds or fill it with a more uniform gold color from the left side if that makes sense.  Minor nit on a wonderful image(s).

Beautiful light and details give to this picture a very special mood that I cannot describe but I can say that I love it and which one? the answer is both.

Love the rays of light and how the section of river far below reflects the light like a beacon in the darkness.  I do prefer the second version of your image; the warmer light just works better in my opinion.  Beautiful images, both.

Great feeling to this and one small thought on clone out clouds in upper right.  Very good light.

Nice light and a good composition. I like the second version better with more detail.

Mark, I like the upper left quarter with the light beams spilling ove the ridges.  Preference to the clouds being cropped off as in #1.  Hope you had a good trip.

Mark,

Fabulous!  Easy choice for me - the second version. It sure seems the light rays are more prominent and warmer; I also like how the light illuminates the ridge top better too. Also, the second version has some clouds as well to help balance the ones on the right; although I wish there was a bit more of them to see so it didn't feel so squeezed up top.  But that's very minor.

No other nits or suggestions.

I like the warmer light in the second version Mark.  The contrast in the second version livens up the terraces down in the canyon.

Another vote for version 2. I would clone out all the clouds however.
