Hot Creek

Hot Creek in the Eastern Sierra about 10 minutes before sunrise. In the cold winter morning air the rising geo thermal steam is remarkable. Processed in Lightroom and Photoshop CC. Appreciate comments, critiques and/or any suggestions. Thanks

You're really crushing these Eastern Sierra locations, Dave. Fantastic S-curves taking you through to the mountains. Very clean image and nicely rendered color.

You have been scoring big time on the East Side, Dave. I like this a lot. I've been to Hot Creek several times, and never had light like this, which I think is wonderful. I like the steam and its very slightly pink tinge. The creek wandering through, leading up to the mountains works quite well. Nicely done!

Dave,

Beautiful, moody image.  I love the combining of the clear and crisp snow-dusted peaks and the color of the earth's shadow with the soft atmosphere of fog rising up off Hot Creek.  No nits or suggestions. Well seen and beautifully processed.

Now I'm sure you know this Dave, but thought I would post for others to know.  For all you movie buffs or John Wayn fans, this scene right here was one of the many filming locations for the original True Grit.  Just below the LL of Dave's image was the location of Ned Pepper's hideout.  Anyway, just a bit of trivia.  You can see some original location pics here.  Fun stuff.

Just enough clarity in the steam for the foreground stream to lead in and terrific sky color.
The large version certainly pops much better...

Dave, it is amazing to me how the distant summits emerge from the foreground. I also enjoy the way you just give us a hint at the bottom elements. The composition keeps me exploring the whole image.

Darn, this looks like straight from a fairy tale! I really like what the mist added to this scene, looks stunning. I do think the forergound rock in the llc is distracting, and I think I would go for a crop just above that rock. Somehow I feel that that rock removes some of the mystery from this scene. It doesn't blend in with that gorgeous valley. Absolutely great photo nevertheless!

And Lon, thanks for that background info, nice to know!

Beautiful soft pastels, and the fog hints a the pinks in the sky.  A processing idea that might give a slightly different look, not necessarily better though.  Since the river is lost in some areas due to the lack of contrast in the lighting, maybe selectively adding some clarity or contrast in areas of the river / bank to give it more of a presence.  Don't want to los e the nice misty effect though.  The other idea might be to try and slightly adjust the color balance of the darker ground areas, probably the blacks.  Less magenta, more cyan to my eye anyway.

Nicely seen. The image really draws one in through the rising steam to the mountains in the background. Technically well done. Nice to look at.

A lovely long view up the misty creek to that rugged mountain with great colors in the sky, Dave.  The mist adds a good sense of mystery to the lower sections and the mountain stands out cleanly, a fine catch.

Very nice guide for the eyes those curves in the foggy river. It's was probably the nicest time to see so many details in the mountains. Beautiful picture.
