This is one of my favorite angles to get a bird of prey in

Nikon D7100 80-400mm @ 350mm VR HH cropped sensor
f/5.6
1/4000s
ISO 320 ISO 1000

Cropped to 70% of original

Great pose and eye contact! There is a bit of noise and lack of structure from breast to tail. I suspect a combination of the shallow dof and the cropped sensor.

I really like the wing position, Luke.  To my eye, the image seems rather dull-I wonder if a bit of contrast boost might help.

I really like the pose here Luke. I agree the BG seems to have some noise to it, which is weird since this was shot at ISO 320? Was this underexposed perhaps and adjusted in PP? If so, I think you can correct this a bit with some NR on the BG only. I might also add some saturation overall, then selectively burn the owl ( a touch more on face and neck area) and then add back some contrast to the owl only. I know that sounds like a lot, but I really think it might give this a bit more punch.

All, thanks for the feedback.  My mistake - this was ISO 1000.  I have no idea why I typed 320!  If I had 1/4000s of a SS at ISO 320 I certainly would have been dealing with much better lighting!  I'll go through some more images and spend a bit more time on the processing to see what I can improve.  Thanks for the feedback!
