Treeleidoscope +RP
by Brad Strong
I took this in 2007 during a trip to Yosemite Valley (You could already tell that by looking, right?). This is in the Merced River right in the valley. I was on the photo-walk guided tour. The guide was showing Ansel Adams prints at the time I took this. I don't think she was all that amused.
This is another revisited/reedited image. B&W was the only real choice for this one.
Canon Rebel XTi, 200mm 2.8L @ f/2.8, 1/200 Sec, ISO 400, Hand-held, LR CC.
All comments welcome. I'm thinking of burning to the left of the tree some more but am not sure. I kind of like the detail there though.

4 commentsI see the primary interest as the left and center of the image. I don't see the the right side adds much. As such, I think I would play with cropping a bit from the right side to tighten up the comp.
I appreciate your choice of going for b+w, that puts a bit of "mystery" in this comp, and makes me wonder about the photo a lot. I do think the 50/50 comp is also responsible for that feeling.
The tree is eye catching enough to work like this, so burning the part to the left is not necessary for me. I could actually see a slight dodging on the right side as a positive thing I think. The reflection works very well too!
Never in a million years would I have guessed Yosemite. I can't even figure out what kind of tree that is, and it's not like there's a huge variety of trees. I suppose a fir, cedar or something that is OLD and weathered and where through erosion and flooding, the tops of the roots have been exposed. This looks my like a cypress swamp to me.
Anyway... a terrific image and a great choice to go b&w. Despite the chaotic nature of surrounding shore, the tree focuses the scene nicely.
I too would consider dodging a bit on the right, or even a slight crop from the right. I think the interested beside the tree and reflection is more on the left than on the right. Also, minor thing, this appears to be slightly rotated ccw if viewing just the water line on the tree.
Kudos for coming away with this from Yosemite. Who would have known...
