High Desert Moonrise + Repost

Image taken last full moon cycle in the Eastern Sierra. I have recently begun using the Photographers Ephemeris app. and, at least for my light-chaser style, quickly finding it indispensable. I was able to pre-scout this location and predict exactly where and when the moon would rise. No more guess work... Appreciate any comments/suggestions.

Very nice color extending from foreground to background.  I really like the way the tree in the foreground anchors the image with the layers of mountains, sky, and moon bringing up the background.

I have heard a lot about that P.E. app. I am more old school, but I can see how it must help a lot with planning images. It paid off nicely here, this is excellent. Nice with the moon peeking trhough a hole in the clouds at the right time, that is still something that can never be planned! Gorgeous gradient in the sky, and I like the look of those snowy mountain tops in the distance.

Beautiful image, Dave. Nice combination of elements and perfectly exposed. Congrats on the planning. Certainly paid off. Personally, I would tighten the comp by cropping the sky down to the top bright red area on the right.

Hi Dave,

Another beautiful image to add to your photography work. The image is framed up nicely, and the the lone tree works well for the vertical format. Ideally, I would love the moon to be higher up in the frame, but there is a lot of interest in the sky still with the color gradient.  I love the rugged landscape, and one does feel like he or she is there with you in this fine capture.

have you experimented with a crop form the top of the sky down a bit? Beautifully as presented, but maybe a crop could really emphasize the moon and tree more. I guess it all depends what you are trying to convey.

Beautiful photography any way you look at it.

Splendid color Dave.  Looking at this again after reading some of comments about cropping the sky a little,  think I tend to agree.  Fantastic image none the less.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. Here's a tighter horizontal comp of the scene which maybe more in line with your suggestions. Do you prefer this composition?

Dave,

I've used PE in the past - it's a handy tool.

Gorgeous image.  I love the pinks and colors in the high clouds and I like the fact that those clouds help from letting the moon become just a white blob (in the repost too.)   The tree is wonderful as a primary focal point and I love the rock to ground the image and the snow-capped White mountains are icing on the cake.

I was also thinking of a crop before reading the comments.  Perhaps not a horizontal one as I think the repost has too much space on the right.  I would think just a minimal crop, say to nearer a 4x5 ratio?  Of course we're in the realm of personal choice and what matters is what you like.  but I'd sure be  very happy if this were mine!

Wonderful color and mood. I tend to agree with Lon's suggestion for a 4x5 crop. At least to me, the tree, the foreground rocks, and the moon are the stars of the show. A 4x5 crop would work well. In any event, this is very nice image, Dave.

I like the idea of a 4x5 vertical presentation, Dave, just taking it off the top of the original post.  Great mood and a lovely image.

I much prefer the original post. It gives me a feeling of the tree reaching for the beautifully colored sky. Even with a 4x5 crop, I still prefer the original.

Beautiful image.  Both the original and a bit of a crop from the top work well for me, better than the horizontal comp.

While both are gorgeous I am leaning toward the original post, Dave. I do like the crop suggestion; maybe to a little above that wonderful patch of warm red color on the right side. The colors in the sky are simply beautiful and I love those wisps of clouds in front of the moon. The tree also helps anchor the scene IMO. Glad the PE app is working out for you.

Super cool shot!

Although I resist crops sometimes, this one might benefit from a little off the top.
