Raging Potomac #1

We got lots of rain on Wed. then the sun came out bright and clear on Fri. so I went back to Great Falls to work on mistbows.  There was more than twice as much (by volume) water flowing over the falls this time, so the scene was quite different.  Thanks to the suggestions related to my last post, I think I did better.  What do you think?  Here's a vertical view of the raging river with a mistbow.  (7D2, 70-200 f2.8 @ 148mm, f/16, 1/4 s, iso 100, tripod, polarizer, 16x ND filter, and cable release)

Mark: I don't associate the Potomac with fast water like this although I've seen many images from Great Falls. I think this is terrific and the rainbow in the mist is icing on a very fine cake. 2 thumbs up! >=))>

Mark,
This is excellent and very creative. Choice of SS works great to show the force of the flowing water. The splash of color creates a great visual element. Processing looks good on my monitor.

Your SS choice produced some wonderful textures in the water, Mark. Of course the mistbow is an added bonus to this intimate waterscape. Nicely done.

Seriously, you are hitting the jackpot with that shutter speed and that color of the water. Those patterns are kind of mesmerizing to me! This comp works better for me than your previous one, wouldn't change a thing! The touch of rainbow is such a nice addition.

Yes, I like this one much more, Mark. The image is dynamic throughout the entire frame. The mistbow at the top is nice, and I especially like the criss-crossing water pattern below.

I like this one better too, Mark. this comp works better for me and your shutter speed really nailed the raging feel of the water. Some very cool textures and color in this as well. Nice work!

Stunning work for me, Mark. All the elements work perfectly together and you captured the multidirectional flow in a convincing way to my eye.

Mark,

Excellent work on your return to the river.  Just like the previous image, the mistbow is the icing on the cake and takes the image a step beyond just a raging water image.  The vertical comp is excellent.  What I find interesting about the shutter speed is how it's affect on the water is slightly different top to bottom. Up top, the water is flowing freely and a bit faster, so there's more of a longer shutter speed effect.  Where as after the rocks, the water is more turbulent, even going up and down and it looks like a shorter shutter speed.  Not sure if that makes sense.  If it doesn't, the bottom line is I like the flow and motion of the raging water.

Not nits that I can find.  But I did come across an alternative thought, by accident.  The larger view is taller than my monitor so I have to scroll vertically and can't get the whole image in one view (ok, I can by zooming in the browser.)  But I'm now thinking about a crop from the bottom, almost to a square, but not quite.  Just enough off the bottom to eliminate those "peaks" in the water at the bottom.  I don't know if that's an improvement, or just an alternative, but I like the resulting balance.  Just a thought.

Lon

I like the contrast between the pêle-mêle in the water flow and water colorations on one hand, and the calming effect of the rainbow on the other.  Very fine image.  Excellent choice of SS.

Hi Mark,

This image works for me. It is a pretty nice abstract with some bonus color from the mistbows.  I like the foreground elements in the image. ...........................Jim

I looked at this one initially on my iPad and it was difficult to make out however I can see that it was something special. Now that I am looking at it on the big screen, I am even more impressed. The cacophony of water cascading down Great Falls is really impressive here and I think you got the shutter speed right on to create an incredible sense of tumult.  Very painterly. One of the best things I've seen you do Mark.

Very dynamic image, Mark. Excellent use of light. I like intimate waterfall scenes myself and this fits the bill perfectly. The eye goes to the rainbow at the top right away. Good choice with the SS - adds a painting like feel to the image.

Hi Mark,

Talk about a raging flow of water; this image really gives you the sense of how turbulent this river was at the time of your capture. I enjoy the movement in the water, the rocks are placed nicely in the frame, and the color of the rainbow is a great extra element to stimulate the sense that much more.

Sweet capture

I like the degree of blur in the water, Mark.  I don't know if the mist bow shifts around with the breeze, but to my eye it looks rather undefined and doesn't add much to the image.  I like the composition as well.
