Avocets & Phalaropes

American Avocet (Recurvirostra americana) & Wilson’s Phalarope (Phalaropus tricolor)

Place: Gilbert Water Ranch, AZ
Date: April 22, 2008, 7:53 am
Equipment: Nikon D200, Nikkor AF-S 300/2.8 & TC20E (2x), G1325, RRS BH-55, sidekick
Exposure: aperture priority matrix meter, ISO 320, 1/640th @ f/11, -2/3rd ev comp
Raw, PSCS3 on Mac G4, modest crop

I posted this originally in April of 2008, but it seemed a good fit to this week’s challenge theme of Big and Small. I rarely do well with multiple subjects (even when they are a male and female pair of the same species), so I was happy when this grouping formed in front of me.

Honest critiques requested; all comments appreciated. Larger version provided for critical review.

A ery clever instance of the weekly theme, Rich. Despite decades of birding, I never thought of the similarity in these two very different species.Wonderful light and techs, too.

Beautiful colors in these birds, Richard.  The matched strides of the Avocets is a great catch and Phalaropes fill the frame very well.  I'm also really enjoying the reflections.

Multiple subjects are tough, Richard, but you really pulled this one off nicely.  Your dof was perfect to get them all nicely crisp and I like the relative positions of the birds.

Really nice catch, Rich, and interesting size comparison of the two species.  Although Sibley's shows their range to include Louisiana, I don't think I've ever seen a phalarope in my area before.  Good techs and nicely framed.
