Wintry Morning

Passing this scene a few moments before sunrise on a rather cold morning in January, we just had to stop to take this shot.

Waldviertel, a sometimes inhospitably cold region in the northern part of Lower Austria.

Comments and critique are appreciated.

The light and lines in the foreground are very sweet, I really enjoy this! I am a bit on the fence about the horizon, it feels a bit unbalanced with the empty part to the right. How about a vertical 4:5 crop with only the middle part of the picture, isolating the central part of the horzion?

Peter, I agree with Roel about the comp on this one. I think I might crop in on the left side just past the line of trees to the first opening, then closer to the trees on the right side as well. Actually I don't mind the open space on the right so much but feel the trees on the left running out of the frame make it feel unbalanced. Nick

Thanks for your thoughts on this image, Roel and Nick!

My intention was to convey the impression of vastness in this scene. Therefor I made use of the kind of empty or negative space in the sky as well as in the field. The diagonals of the soil added some graphic interest to my eye and I focussed my attention on how they cut the left border of the image. With regard to these aspects, other crops did not really work for me. Hope that makes sense.
