Hi everyone, apologies for my absence from NPN recently, I have just returned from leading photo tours in Ecuador and the Galapagos.  I photographed this bird in the lowlands of Western Ecuador, this Blue-necked Tanager was high in a tree and I managed to get the take off shot.

It looks like a leap more than flight.  Very interesting bird with fascinating color.

Thanks David, yes it's a strange flight position but he commenced with flight after this as otherwise he would have hit the ground because it was a long way between trees.

Neat looking bird, Nate, and you got good detail.  It does look like the light was very harsh and those blue feathers are always tough in harsh light.

Thanks Dennis, I didn't think the light was very harsh when I shot this actually, it was late afternoon.
