Never lived there and this was taken in New Mexico right next to the Arizona border.  There were large flocks of them around in early March last year and they were all over the place in their conversion to breeding plumage.  This one was further along than most.

7D2, 500 mm f4 ISL + 1.4 TC, hand held, f/6.3, 1/2000, iso 400, aperture priority, center weighted average metering.  Processed in LR5 & CS6.  Cropped from a horizontal original.  Taken March 7, 2015.

Comments are always appreciated.

Thanks,

Dennis, this is a good look at this bird with enough habitat for some extra interest.  You've got a fine catch light in its eye and good details showing in the larger version.

All the elements of an Audubon bird portrait (without the awkward body positions; and the light is more lively -- OK, some of the elements, but they are good ones).  Just enough habitat elements to nicely frame the bird, and a clean. but not artificial-looking background.
